About Arden House

This gorgeous cottage situated on the outskirts of the delightful village of Sleights is well situated for discovering the outstanding North York Moors National Park and nearby coastal town of Whitby. Set over three floors, with lovely views from the top, families settle immediately into the pace of village life and appreciate the stunning scenery of this comfortable Yorkshire base. On entering the handsome, double-fronted property, guests are welcomed by a pleasing reception hall with wooden floors and cosy sitting room with wood burning stove – the perfect place to snuggle up and unwind after a long coastal walk. The separate dining room boasts a superb original decorative range which adds a pleasing sense of homeliness and nostalgia to mealtimes. A light and tastefully-decorated kitchen is complemented by a pantry, complete with a very handy shower room, basin and WC. To the first floor is a tranquil twin bedroom and impressive master bedroom, both with original cast iron fireplaces. The valley vistas are quite breathtaking from both rooms and it is pleasing to spend time observing the changing effects of light and weather upon the landscape. The extra-large walk-in shower (no step up) is also a delight. Another spacious double bedroom with TV and an original fireplace, armchair, and superb views is on the second floor. There is also a small single room on this floor. In warmer weather, the small front patio area is a real sun trap, making it a pleasurable place to sit and have a peaceful cup of tea surrounded by flowers and srubs. On-street parking is directly opposite. The river Esk, Yorkshire’s only salmon river, runs through Sleights and between October and December salmon leap upriver to their spawning grounds. The charming village has a very popular cafe and garden centre located on the river bank which is a two minute walk from the property. The village also has two inns, a bakers, quality butchers and grocers. Spend time browsing the antiques emporium, sampling fresh fish and chips or spotting steam trains as they pass through Sleights’s small station on their way to Whitby. With lovely walks nearby and Whitby, with its fine maritime heritage and sandy beach, only a five minute drive away, guests are sure to feel rejuvenated by time well spent in this gorgeous part of North Yorkshire.

Arden House Reviews

Elizabeth
We had a fantastic two night stay. The house was immaculately clean and had everything we needed. Great, quiet location just outside of Whitby
We had a really lovely short break in this beautiful cottage. Very child friendly with good blinds and thick curtains to help sleep, a games cupboard, a big box of books and plastic beakers, plates etc... We enjoyed days out in Whitby, Saltburn by the Sea and Sandsend. Would definitely return.
Louise
Thank you for our lovely stay, in your beautiful property Barbra. It was great to arrive to some Easter treats and some fizz. Our kids loved it! You have such nice neighbours and what a beautiful village the house is situated in. Thanks again.
Catherine
We came to stay we our friends and dog for the New Year period . We all enjoyed the peaceful location and the small Journey into Whitby by car was hassle free. The house was fabulous and our stay was loved by all of us .
Katherine

Home from home as far as facilities are concerned, very comfortable and clean , lovely area, everything we needed
Lovely property, well maintained by owners. We all enjoyed our little holiday in sleights and to top it all we had beautiful weather which was the icing on the cake !
Lovely house. .perfect for a group of friends for a short break. Lovely local walks and good public transport to Whitby and surrounding area.
Elizabeth
Lovely property and in a great location! Perfect with the train station a short walk down the road to get into Whitby. Everything was provided for and I couldn't fault our stay.

Arden house is a great property for a holiday in the North Yorks Moors. We had a fab week staying with friends. The beds are really comfy and surrounding area quiet. The lounge has a great log burner and the owner left us some logs for the first couple of nights. It has 2 bathrooms 1 downstairs so no queuing for showers. Its 2 mins walk from Sleights train station so handy if u didnt want to drive into Whitby. There is also a bus stop to Whitby 100m away. There is a quirky pubhotel 5mins walk away. We didnt eat there but had a drink. There are lots of lovely walks although some very muddy lots of rain recently however the Cinder track wasnt too muddy and great to walk to Robin Hoods Bay. The Coastal path Cleveland way has amazing views but once again very muddy due to all the rain. Would be fab in drier weather. Highly recommend Arden House and the surrounding area for a holiday. Barbara left a lovely welcome back with local goodies which were lovely.
Cheryl
Lovely property in quiet village, but with easy driving access to main roads to all locations. Beautiful dog friendly beach 10 minutes away. Spotless towels and bedding, with spacious showers, and ample hot water for our party of six. Very clean and appealing throughout when we entered the property. The owner had obviously given thought to the small touches and I would not hesitate in recommending to family and friends .
We spent a week here with our grandchildren. The beds were very comfortable and we slept well. A goodie bag containing local delicacies was much appreciated. The front garden is a suntrap for most of the day. Parking is easy in the layby across the street. Whitby is 3 miles away and has many attractions. The grandchildren enjoyed searching for and finding fossils on the beach at Sandsend Ness. We look forward to a return visit.
Arden House was a fantastic place to stay. Me and my family have been staying in local similar accommodation for years and we all agreed this was the best yet....the house was spacious, well layed out and had all your modern comforts...the village is amazing and has some local beauties such as Botham's bakery and some amazing dog walks...the accommodation had everything you could wish for and the welcome pack was superb....for a night out I'd recommend the bridge Inn in ruswarp which is only 1.5 miles away...great food and feel..we would highly recommend
Well kept and equipped property, had a great 3 weeks stay there.
Claire
Property was filthy. Had to get cleaners to come back on first day, but because I didnt I ring for them to come back during our stay to do more inadequate cleaning Sykes and the property owner were not willing to offer compensation. I had to deep clean the house it had months of dirt in it. Unacceptable 4 star experience. Property full of clutter. Would not recommend to anyone. It also does not have a garden and the front patio is small and had 5 cigarette butts on the floor and the gate opens straight onto a road..so not really suitable for a family with children.
Tracey
Amazing place to stay. Short train ride into Whitby. Salmon Leap which is a pub less than 5 minutes walk away is a lovely bar with a small menu and amazing home cooked food. This is our Second stay in this house over the years it is beautiful.
We really enjoyed our stay at Arden house! It is a perfect quiet locality for exploring Whitby and the surroundings. The house had plenty of space for two families 4 adults and 3 kids. It is spotlessly clean and decorated very nice with good sized rooms that are bigger than what they look like in photos. Thank you for a lovely stay!

COVID instructions posted liberally around property not followed through. E.g. Request to strip bed linen and place in plastic bags. But no bags provided!
The cottage was in a lovely location, was clean and very well equipped. When we had an electrical problem it was rectified very quickly. If I was being picky a new non stick frying pan wouldn't have gone amiss, but this was a home away from home. Loved it.
Nice location if you like a walk or train ride into Whitby.
Deborah
Arden House is a fantastic home from home. The house contains everything you need to have a great time. We ate in each night, and all the utensils we required, were to hand. All appliances worked perfectly and there were plenty of sockets for our own electrical devices. The furniture is of good quality and all the beds were extremely comfortable so all eight members of our party, slept well each night. The location of the house, in a quiet residential area, means noise levels are to a minimum, even though the house is on a through route for the area. All in all, we had the best time that will be remembered, for all the right reasons, for years to come.
Great stay . Enjoyed by all our family .Arden House more spacious inside than it appears in photo's and location lovely . Small village with great butchers and chippy !.
Kathryn
We felt that the house was very welcoming and well resourced, except for oven gloves and strangely a dustpan, plenty of brooms. Sleights exceeded our expectations as a lovely area. Great walks, two very food pubs, we particularly lovedSalmon leaps which had just re opened but the staff went above and beyond. Fantastic garden centre and boating, steam train at Ruswarp. Only downside was unreliable buses.
It was a warm week and it would have been good to have an alternative to the thick duvets, e. G. lighter duvets or a sheet. It was a real negative to be asked to return the keys to the office in Whitby. It added 30 minutes to a journey home of 6 hours and at that time 9.45am there were no parking spaces in Skinner Street. Could they not be left in a key safe at the property or with a neighbour? The basket of provisions was really great! Excellent quality and most welcome. Thanks. We enjoyed the holiday very much indeed.
Thank you for helping us find a lovely cotage at the very last minute. Diane at Yorkshire Coastal Cottages you were a star!
Fabulous and very comfortable cottage, excellent location.
Fantastic, well equipped plenty of everything we will book this cottage again
We had an amazing time in your gorgeous cottage, it was so clean, the beds were a delight to jump into, the most comfortable we have ever slept in, thank you for the lovely welcome hamper and the helpfulness of your staff.
Thank you for letting us stay in this beautiful cottage, it was fabulous, the views from the top are lovely. We had a wonderful time visiting Whitby and watching the steam trains come through the village.
A beautiful property, tastefully decorated, the goody bag and having basics such as washing up liquid and soap in bathrooms was invaluable, thank you.
Thank you the cottage was really nice, very clean & tidy, lovely walks, YCC staff were very helpful
